WHAT IS HIGH ENERGY BALL MILLING?
High energy milling offers untapped potential for promoting chemical transformations at the nanoscale via highly energetic collisions. The collision of grinding media and the material effects compositional homogeneity and/or microstructural changes for the production or refinement of alloys, ceramics, and composites. High energy milling is incredibly efficient, streamlining production operations, and minimizing or eliminating waste outputs.
Our high energy ball milling process operates dry and under an inert environment to prevent oxide formation and eliminate contamination associated with process control agents. High energy ball milling can be applied anywhere from the laboratory scale of a few grams of powder to commercial setups.

OUR HIGH ENERGY BALL MILLING SERVICES
MATSYS’s internal milling capabilities extend to high energy Zoz mills of three sizes for rapid development of milling schedules and demonstration on kilogram scales. The processing parameters developed on the CM01 are directly applicable to the CM08 and CM20, offering a unique opportunity to quickly and efficiently transition technology from the experimental to the manufacturing phase. Through a process of cyclic fracturing and cold-welding, mechanical alloying achieved in the high energy ball mills has the ability to produce single phase high entropy alloys, highly integrated binary and ternary compositions, as well as highly refined single element powders.
CRYOGENIC & ULTRA-LOW TEMPERATURE MILLING
We have also developed unique cryogenic (-160°C) and ultra-low temperature (-90°C) capabilities, allowing in operando conditioning of powders below their ductile-brittle transition temperature, creating ideal conditions for mechanical alloying. Our cryogenic milling capabilities operate dry, where the cryogen is never in contact with the powders. By tailoring the time, temperature, and rotational energy, the morphology and particle size distribution of the charge can be tailored to meet our customer’s intended application.
Our cryogenic setup is supported by a MATSYS-developed control system that seamlessly integrates with Zoz equipment, allowing us to monitor and tailor the time, temperature, and milling energy of operations, ultimately producing morphology and particle size distribution that is customizable to customer needs.
